Library
Alyth Library – Airlie Street, Alyth (the main street with Costcutter, Post Office etc)
Dundee Central Library – Wellgate Centre, Dundee
You can use internet in the libraries for free but during summer you sometimes have to book your session.
Health
There is a health centre in Alyth with 3 doctors if you need to see one during your stay.
Weather
The weather in Scotland is very changeable and the temperatures in the United Kingdom during summer are considerably lower than in most European countries.
Pubs and restaurants
Alcohol can be served only after 11.00. It is very important that you do not drink alcohol in any public places – this is considered a criminal offence.
There are
a few restaurants and takeaways in Alyth and more in other local towns as well as both Dundee and Perth.
Smoking
There has been a law passed in Scotland which bans smoking in enclosed public places. Please be aware you can be fined money if you do not obey this.
Walking/cycling on UK roads
In the UK cars are driven (and bicycles are ridden) on the left hand side of the road. It is advisable to walk facing the traffic so you can see the traffic coming and move from the road if required to do so. High visibility clothing is advised when cycling on the roads to make yourself visible to other road users. It is illegal to ride a bicycle on pavements. Hitchhiking is not advised in the UK. It is better to use public transport such as buses and taxis.
Shops in Alyth
There are three grocery shops in Alyth. Spar at the square, Co-op and Costcutter are located on Airlie Street. They are open weekdays and Saturday from 08.00 to 22.00. They close at 20.00 on Sundays. Spar at the square stays open until 22.00. There is a Post Office is on Airlie Street and the bank is in the Square. There are other shops in Alyth too. If you travel to Blairgowrie you will find a larger supermarket (Tesco) and more choice of shops.
Sport
Alyth has got a football pitch and U- ramp. There are bikes available to borrow in the farm camp. You can also play table tennis, table football or pool in the camp. There is also a few other items including golf clubs, volleyballs etc. A larger variety of facilities can be found in Blairgowrie or Dundee (swimming pools, ice-rink, fitness studios etc). If there is enough interest, football matches can be arranged.
Other places of interest
There are other recreational facilities like cinemas in Dundee and Perth. There are also larger shops, clothes shops, restaurants and nightclubs etc in Perth or Dundee. There are tourist attractions in both the cities and in the surrounding areas. If you want to find out more, go to the tourist information centre in Blairgowrie, Dundee or Perth.
